About
Jardín de Mariposas School is a nature-focused Spanish immersion school where children take part in science, art, and nature exploration. The program includes time in outdoor classrooms and an expansive educational garden, where children explore and create, garden by planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting, and care for animals such as a rabbit, hen, and bearded dragon. Music is described as the foundation of language at the school, and children build a repertoire of songs in Spanish as they grow in the Jardín through a music program that includes song, movement, instruments, beginning music theory, choral notes, and songs with the piano.
• Ages: 2–6 years old
• Schedule: Morning and full day programs offered
Jardín de Mariposas School has a dedicated Science classroom for all students, a dedicated STEAM studio, indoor/outdoor classrooms, and an outdoor garden/orchard classroom that includes an 1800 square foot garden classroom with an outdoor stage, a grape-covered house for gathering, a story tree, a chalkboard wall, and over 25 fruit trees and vines. Students spend 75% of the day outdoors, and children are caretakers of the garden and enjoy local CSA or JDM grown produce as part of an environmental education program with the stated goal that students will be future advocates for the planet. Caring for animals, including the rabbit, hen, and bearded dragon, is described as an integral part of nature and social/emotional education.
The school’s mission is “to cultivate a caring community of multilingual life-long learners in a natural and inspirational setting.” Jardín de Mariposas School describes exposure to languages and cultures as providing a diverse base on which to build compassion and awareness of the world, and offers a Spanish music class for babies and toddlers for the community on Friday mornings. The leadership team includes Founder & Director Melissa Graney, Assistant Director Eda Cano, and teachers Maestra Deysi and Maestra Yaya; Maestra Robin leads 2 and 3 year olds in a weekly song, movement, and instruments class, and Maestra Yael leads 4 and 5 year olds in beginning music theory, choral notes, and songs with the piano. In 2020, Jardín de Mariposas School expanded its vegetable garden and created the 1800 square foot garden classroom for its community. The program operates under CA license #434415418.
